چکیده

precipitation. These three methods correlate well. The electrophoretic method was found to be the most suitable for the study of this antibody. Antibodies to gastric mucosa were demonstrated by complement fixation and immunofluorescence. The two methods gave good correlation, the latter being more sensitive. The antigen was localized in the cytoplasm of the parietal cells and was recovered in the particulate fraction of gastric mucosal homogenates. The complement-fixing antibody is a 7S y-globulin, which is specific for parietal cells and cross-reacts with gastric mucosal extracts of other species. The parietal-cell antibody is distinct from anti-I.F. Of patients with pernicious anaemia, 44% had autoantibodies to I.F. The incidence of parietal-cell antibodies was 86%. This compares with 1 1 % in controls matched for age and sex. The immunofluorescent test may have important diagnostic applications, particularly for pernicious anaemia patients under the age of 60, where the incidence of positive reactions was 93%. Close parallels between pernicious anaemia and autoimmune thyroiditis are drawn on the basis of clinical and immunological features.

Autoimmune Serological Studies in Chronic Gastritis and Pernicious Anaemia.

This paper describes the incidence of positive serological tests for autoantibodies to gastric mucosal antigen and to thyroglobulin in patients with chronic gastritis, pernicious anaemia, and postgastrectomy gastritis. The results support the recent concept (British Medical Journal, 1962) that diffuse atrophic gastritis, which is the essential lesion in most cases of pernicious anaemia, may hav...

Vitiligo and auto immune diseases: A survey of 100 patients

Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease which is characterized by depigmented patches due to loss of pigment cells. Evidence suggests that cell-mediated immunity plays a role in melanocyte destruction while some patients have antibodies to melanocytes or melanocytic proteins. Vitiligo is strongly associated with a number of autoimmune disorders. Autoimmune thyroiditis is the most prevalent disea...

Juvenile pernicious anaemia and hypothyroidism. A family study.

A man presented with the sudden onset of pernicious anaemia at the age of 21. He had been treated for hypothyroidism since the age of 6. His father and only paternal aunt were also found to have pernicious anaemia. Gastric and thyroid antibody studies showed one or more antibodies to be present in all three subjects, as well as in the patient's mother.

Autoimmune endocrinopathy associated with diabetes insipidus.

Introduction Certain individuals and families seem to be unusually prone to develop organ-specific autoimmune disorders. The conditions which appear most closely associated are thyroid disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, thyrotoxicosis or primary hypothyroidism), Addison's disease, hypoparathyroidism and pernicious anaemia. A number of other conditions may also be associated including diabetes me...

Absorption of vitamin B12 in rheumatoid arthritis.

Since auto-immunity may possibly be a common denominator in pernicious anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, and the rheumatic diseases, the suggested increased incidence ofpernicious anaemia in rheumatoid arthritis (Partridge and Duthie, 1963) is of considerable interest. Their figure of 1 4 per cent., which was five times higher than in their patients with other musculoskeletal disorders, was based o...
